We work with experienced land based observers, locally named “vigias” that search and track whales and dolphins with binoculars, so our observation success is very high. Additionally, an onboard hydrophone (underwater microphone) can be used for sperm whale detection.
Sperm whales are owners of one of the most sophisticated and powerful sonar systems on the planet, producing click like sounds to hunt, navigate and communicate. Our hydrophone can pick up the echolocation clicks of a diving sperm whale anywhere from 1 to 5 miles away.
KEIKO is a 9m rigid inflatable boat powered by a 300Hp Suzuki 4-stroke outboard engine with quiet operating levels and equipped according to the EU safety standards. RIB boats combine speed with extraordinary stability, being the ideal choice for our sea conditions. For those who normally suffer from seasickness it’s the ideal choice. The reduced number of passengers aboard (max. 14) and the use of a small boat keeps the tours and the encounters with the animals more personal.
Whale watching tours are always dependent on sea conditions. If the tour is cancelled due to rough sea, bad weather or absence of animals we can book you for another day or you can be refunded.
While it is possible to see whales all year round, the best time is from March through October, mainly because of weather and sea conditions.
Yes, all our tours help finance Whale Projects Azores (WPA) research and conservation efforts.
During the summer (June – August), light summer tops and pants or shorts are fine, but it’s a good idea to bring layers such as a sweater or a raincoat. On cool days, evening trips and during the spring (March – May) and fall (October – November), long pants, a sweater, a raincoat and a beanie are recommended. Waterproof clothes are provided if necessary.
Sunglasses (preferably polarized), camera, hat or beanie, sunscreen and a sense of adventure.
